Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT)
are build around the so-called variator, which is a mechanical structure capable of smoothly changing its speed ratio. The variator is typically extended with a clutch for vehicle starts and a planetary gearset to ensure the reverse speed. A CVT provides stepless variation of the speed ratio without any interruption in the drive torque.
